Only install a new battery if all of the following are true:
1. The chromebook is able to power on with a connected charger
2. The battery status window does NOT show a "time until full" or "time left" and only shows the number %
3. The chromebook powers off once you disconnect the charger
1. The chromebook is able to power on with a connected charger - Make sure to only install new batteries in chromebooks that can power on directly from a connected charger. If you connect the charger to the chromebook and it does not power on and you also have tried executing the powerwash keyboard command (esc + refresh + power), then do not install a new battery. Instead, send this "will not power on" type of chromebook issue to us right away so we can send it to Dell warranty repair.
2. The battery status window does NOT show a "time until full" or "time left" and only shows the number %
The easiest/fastest way to tell if the battery is bad is to check the battery status window. If you DO NOT see a time displayed next to the battery percentage % then the battery is bad. If the battery is full it may not show the time . It does not matter what the percentage number is as it can be 1%, 15%, 89%,ect. just make sure if the chromebook can display the time. On newer chrome OS versions it will show "Time left" on the older chrome OS versions it will show "time until full". See the pics below. The good battery displays the time left and the bad battery does not display the time next to the percentage %.
3. The chromebook powers off once you disconnect the charger
The "battery issue" and "will not power on" issues are not considered the same thing. If you get a chromebook that powers off right when you disconnect the charger send it over to us right away as this type of issue is considered the "will not power on" issue and we will send it in to Dell warranty repair. Save time and batteries and don't worry about disconnecting/reconnecting the current battery or installing a new battery. At this point, if the chromebook can not power on from a direct power source (charger), then there is a different type of issue which is covered under our warranty. If you install batteries into these types of chromebooks that are not able to power on from a charger, there is a good chance you will see these chromebooks again with the same issue.
